BENEATH THE SKIN : A Group Exhibition

Beneath the Skin is a curated group exhibition that looks at identity and self, exploring our differences and shared similarities.

In a tense political time in which xenophobia and racist violence claims the lives of many, art has more responsibility than ever to communicate the spirit of Ubuntu and explore who we really are as human race.

Art can facilitate change as it helps create new dialogues, develop our understanding, and either inspire, or in itself be a form or act(s) of restorative justice. Art can take us beyond our differences, expand our imagination and help us to renew ourselves. In Alex Dodd's words, "Art is meant to open up dialogue and give voice to difficult, complex thoughts and feelings that cannot always be reduced to language. The visual is its own language – with its own grammar and syntax. And it allows us to say things that we can’t say in words"

In BENEATH THE SKIN the participating artists explore what makes us human; our shared similarities regardless of race, gender, culture or sexual orientation. We are all 'being's of flesh and bone with shared cellular origins but diverse in our cultures and customs.
