Hand-Carved Woodblock Art by Zolani Siphungela

A carved line has a character unlike any other mark. It catches the light, gives the surface texture and records the physical movement of the artist’s hand.

South African artist Zolani Siphungela cuts his images directly into MDF board using the tools and techniques associated with traditional woodcut printmaking. Rather than using the completed block to produce an edition of prints, he paints onto the carved surface and presents the block itself as the finished artwork. The result is a unique original work- not a reproduction or editioned woodcut print.

Bold carved lines, deep black surfaces and expressive areas of colour give Zolani’s work its unmistakable rhythm. His subjects are drawn from music, community and everyday life, with musicians, dancers and gathered figures brought to life through energetic marks and strong contrasts.

The Blues brings together two figurative scenes within one hand-carved and painted woodblock. Its physical surface rewards close looking, while its scale and confident composition give it a powerful presence in a contemporary interior.
