A cyclist pedals away from view, leaning forward over the handlebars in a blue-and-white striped shirt, loose blue trousers and a pale cap. Forsyth’s fluid marks give both rider and bicycle a lively sense of movement, with the wheels and frame reduced to energetic black lines.
Behind him is an aged 1886 page of the Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette, densely arranged with council notices, warrants and creditors’ announcements. The cyclist appears to travel directly through this formal record, his everyday journey disrupting the fixed columns of historical text. Deep blues and crisp whites bring freshness to the warm, weathered background.
