Artwork Description

A cyclist seen from behind, wearing a green jersey with the number 24, rides across the pages of a Government Gazette dated 25 May 1886. It's an unusual pairing, but one that works beautifully in the hands of South African artist Lisette Forsyth.
The artwork brings together a familiar scene from everyday life and a piece of South Africa's past. The old Gazette, with its columns of official notices and references to land, becomes part of the story rather than simply a background. There's something rather lovely about the idea of a cyclist travelling across a document written more than a century ago.

"Roads Running Over The Land" is available as a signed, limited edition giclée print, produced from Lisette's original artwork. With an edition of just five, it offers collectors an opportunity to enjoy her distinctive combination of contemporary painting and historical material at a more accessible price. Printed on paper and sold unframed, this 30 × 42 cm artwork would make an interesting addition to a study, home office or a collection of contemporary South African prints. A particularly appealing piece for anyone with a love of cycling, history or art that has a story to tell.
