Artwork Description
A young girl holds a small child securely on her hip, their heads close together in a tender, protective exchange. The child’s striped top and soft pink trousers introduce gentle colour, while expressive marks in black, brown, cream and blue give both subjects warmth and immediacy.
Their bodies overlap an aged page from The Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette, dated 20 July 1860. Columns of colonial notices remain visible through their clothing and skin, bringing this intimate moment of care into direct conversation with the historical document beneath. The contrast adds weight to the title, What Holds The Future, without diminishing the closeness shared by the two children.
