Artwork Description
A sky filled with colour takes centre stage in "Aria III", an original oil painting by South African artist Corné Eksteen. Great banks of cloud rise above a quiet landscape, their edges catching the last warmth of the sun in shades of orange, coral, pink and violet.
There's an almost musical rhythm to the way Corné has painted the clouds. Their shapes seem to ripple and shift across the canvas, with bands of colour flowing into one another. Below the dramatic sky, the African savanna stretches towards a distant blue-violet mountain ridge. Corné paints the grasses in warm ochres, russet and earthy browns, their loose, rhythmic brushstrokes echoing the movement of the clouds above.
The contrast between the glowing sky and the quieter savanna gives Aria III much of its appeal. There's a wonderful sense of space in this painting, and something familiar about that vast African sky as the last light of the day catches the clouds.
At 80 × 80 cm, Aria III is a generously sized contemporary landscape painting with plenty of presence. Its rich, warm palette would look wonderful in a living room or dining area, particularly alongside natural timber, earthy fabrics and understated contemporary furniture.
