Some thoughts on Backyards
What is in your backyard? That space behind your house that is hidden or shielded from view.
Maybe it contains a secretive project like a half built boat or a few guarded treasures to be safeguarded like tender shoots. Perhaps your backyard is a place to withdraw, a cloistered space to relax, to be yourself, to dream or to be silly. It could be a wilderness or a junkyard, a garden like an allotment or a simple courtyard.
Perhaps it contains a washing line,a few pot plants, a flower garden, neatly trimmed or gone wild, a cozy nook to sit in the sun on an old garden chair, with a place to braai and a string of outdoor lights overhead, an ancient tree and a musty shed covered with an out of control creeper. Maybe your backyard is the final resting ground of discarded stuff that should go to the dump, the old trampoline and punctured blow up pool, the rusted stepladder and the broken swing.
The series called ‘Backyard’ is rooted in these reflections, an imagined space where nature and our constructed world meets.
