Artwork Description
There's a wonderful sense of movement in Symmetry, an original abstract oil painting by South African artist James de Villiers. The composition brings to mind the rotating blades of a windmill, with broad sweeps of pale blue radiating from the centre, surrounded by a lively tangle of fine lines and colour.
Deep cobalt blues provide a rich backdrop for flashes of pink, violet and red. Look closely and you'll find intricate markings and delicate threads of paint weaving through the larger shapes. There's an underlying order to it all, yet the painting feels as though it's constantly in motion.
What makes Symmetry particularly interesting is that it can be hung in either portrait or landscape orientation. Turn the canvas and the direction of that movement changes, giving you two quite different ways to enjoy the same painting.
At 120 × 150 cm, this is a generously sized contemporary abstract painting that would make a striking addition to a modern living room, entrance hall or double-volume space. Its combination of rich colour, energy and fine detail makes it just as rewarding to appreciate up close as it is from across the room.
