Artist Description
Artist notes:
As an artist living in a small coastal village, I am surrounded with places that keep drawing my attention. A deep connection evolves and compels me to revisit these places again and again. Reading the book “A sense of place” on the Scottish artist Joan Eardley, what struck me was her description of her practice of painting …
“I find the more I know of the place, or of one particular spot, the more I find to paint in that particular spot. I do feel the more you know of something, the more you can get out of it, the more it gives to you.”
And so, some summers, she set up and painted the same vista every day, in every weather, each time allowing her attention to be drawn and swayed by different aspects.
So, I will accede to the pull of the rich yellow ochre of the lichen covered rocks along the Kommetjie coast where I live. I will allow them to hold my attention for my latest body of work. First I will paint and photograph them, and when I have found the form of the things, I will carve them in wood and print them. And then maybe stitch them on a scrap of cloth. But most important, I’ll enjoy the sense of place.
