Artist Description
Artist notes:
I photographed my model on the farm Dapperfontein which belonged to my grandfather. The farm is very near to Merweville. The dam was built by my uncle Willem Kruger many years ago - a little oasis in the middle of the dry Karoo landscape. The waterlilies were the biggest surprise: the scene reminded me of a Mermaid in the Karoo.
As a very small child I loved reading stories out of a series of books that belonged to my grandmother, called the "Die Skatkis". My favorite stories are "The Waterchildren" and "Surella and the freckle". I have heard about the legends of the Mermaid, recorded by the San people on a farm near Oudtshoorn and Meiringspoort, and coincidentally, just after completing this painting a film was shown in Prince Albert about mermaids of the Karoo.
