"Between The Tides I" draws our attention to the patterns that appear and disappear on the surface of water. Laurel Holmes picks out ripples, eddies and tiny air bubbles in pale yellow and soft lilac against warm, coppery brown, turning an ordinary detail of the natural world into something absorbing.
Inspired by the waters of the Klein River in the Overberg, the painting has an almost abstract quality when seen up close. Holmes captures that moment when light catches the moving surface and, for an instant, makes every swirl and reflection visible.
