Artwork Description
Where does that doorway lead?
In "Come Up Here", South African artist Janna Prinsloo paints a man standing at the threshold of a brightly lit doorway, looking into a space we cannot see. Behind him, everything is dark and mysterious. Small, loosely painted shapes float across the blue-black background, while two figures sit together in a little red boat.
There's something wonderfully intriguing about this painting. The man's hand rests on the open door, as though he's deciding whether to step through. The light beyond is almost blinding, but we have no idea what awaits him on the other side.
Janna leaves plenty to the imagination. Is this a moment of discovery, an invitation to something new, or perhaps a journey into the unknown? The tiny boat adds another layer to the story, making you look twice and wonder how the different elements connect.
Painted in mixed media on stretched canvas, Come Up Here combines deep charcoal blues with soft, luminous whites and expressive, gestural marks. At 120 × 90 cm, it's a substantial contemporary figurative painting with a strong presence.
A fascinating choice for collectors who enjoy art that tells a story without giving everything away. This is a painting that invites conversation and rewards a second look.
