Artwork Description
"Petit Jaune" catches a horse and rider in a moment that feels almost snatched from movement. Pascale Chandler builds the pair from loose black marks, smoky greys and flashes of warm yellow, leaving parts of the horse barely there and others more firmly drawn. The rider, picked out in ochre and yellow, sits high in the composition while horse and figure seem to merge and separate as you look.
The smooth surface of Yupo paper gives Chandler’s ink and mixed media room to spread, pool and break apart, which suits the energy of the subject beautifully. At 30 × 42 cm, Petit Jaune is a small original equestrian work with plenty of presence.
