Artwork Description
There is a wonderful looseness to Sea Horse, where Pascale Chandler gives us just enough to recognise a horse and its rider before allowing the paint to take over. Black acrylic gathers into the curve of the horse’s body and legs, while softer, smoky washes suggest its head and movement. Above, the rider is pared back to a dark, almost fleeting figure.
Painted on smooth Yupo paper, the work has an immediacy that suits its subject. Marks run into one another, edges disappear and reappear, and the open white ground gives the horse plenty of room to move. Rather than describing every detail, Chandler captures the energy of horse and rider in a few beautifully confident gestures.
