In Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series II, Kitty Dörje returns to a place remembered from childhood: the historic pool tucked into the lush vegetation of Kirstenbosch's Dell.
As a child visiting with her mother, Dörje imagined the pool as a wishing well, a place where a tossed coin might bring prosperity and good fortune. That memory gives the series its playful spirit. Brilliant blue water sits among exuberant greens, while the patterned stonework and overlapping foliage turn a familiar Kirstenbosch landmark into something more personal and dreamlike.
The title holds another layer of memory. Whatever names the pool has acquired over time, for Dörje it remains Lady Anne Barnard's Bath, connecting the place with ideas of history, romance and the enduring mystery of "the Lady".
