Artwork Description
In "Silvermine VIII", Laurel Holmes turns her attention to the shifting surface of water, where reflections, submerged colour and passing light make it difficult to tell where one ends and another begins. Rust, ochre and earthy greens gather towards the top of the painting, giving way to cooler blue-grey tones below. Across them, quick pale marks catch the light as it breaks over the moving water.
Inspired by Silvermine in the Cape Peninsula, the painting rewards a closer look. What first appears abstract gradually reveals the familiar patterns of ripples and reflections, beautifully observed without being over-described. Holmes has a particular sensitivity to water and the way it changes from one moment to the next, and this intimate 50 × 50 cm painting captures that sense of constant movement.
Silvermine VIII is an original oil painting on canvas by South African artist Laurel Holmes. It measures 50 × 50 cm, is sold unframed and is available for R9,850.
