Artwork Description

Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series IV captures the abundance of Kirstenbosch’s Dell, where water, stone and vegetation seem to fold into one another. Kitty Dörje surrounds the vivid blue pool with a profusion of fern fronds, using fresh greens, turquoise and flashes of yellow to convey the almost tropical density of this much-loved corner of the gardens.

The pool is fed by mountain water that continues on through the landscape, nourishing the extraordinary planting around it. It is this sense of water as something life-giving that adds another dimension to Dörje’s more personal memories of the place.

For the artist, the pool will always be Lady Anne Barnard’s Bath. Its name, history and the childhood mythology Dörje created around it have become intertwined, transforming a real place into one held equally in memory and imagination.

Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series IV is a silkscreen print on paper from an edition of four. This is edition 1/4, measuring 50 × 50 cm unframed, and is available for R3,850.
