Artwork Description

There is something wonderfully tactile about Canopus Crystals by Sylvester Zanoxolo Mqeku. The ceramic vessel has been formed using the artist’s distinctive sand-casting process, leaving its exterior rough, pale and richly textured. Shell-like and crystalline forms gather across the surface, giving the piece an almost excavated quality, as though it has been shaped by natural forces rather than made by hand.

The raw exterior is set against a deep blue glazed interior, a striking contrast that draws the eye into the vessel and emphasises its irregular rim. Mqeku’s work sits comfortably between sculpture and functional form, transforming clay through an experimental process that celebrates texture, imperfection and the unexpected.

Canopus Crystals is a unique sand-cast ceramic sculpture measuring 28 × 12 × 28 cm and is available for R20,750.
