Small in scale but full of character, Blushing Nebulae III by Sylvester Zanoxolo Mqeku balances precariously on a cluster of pointed, irregular forms. The sand-casting process leaves its terracotta exterior wonderfully raw, with pits, ridges and unexpected impressions preserved beneath a soft, frosted pink surface.
The second view reveals the surprise inside. A smooth gold glaze fills the interior, catching and reflecting the light in complete contrast to the dry, granular surface outside. Mqeku makes much of this meeting of opposites: rough and refined, matt and reflective, earth and lustre.
Measuring 14 × 14 × 10 cm, Blushing Nebulae III is an intriguing contemporary ceramic sculpture that can be enjoyed from every angle. Available for R9,200.
