Artwork Description
With its soft pink exterior and gleaming gold interior, Blushing Nebulae I reveals a more delicate side to Sylvester Zanoxolo Mqeku’s sand-cast ceramics. The elongated vessel is edged with small, pointed forms created through the casting process, giving it a curious, almost otherworldly silhouette.
Mqeku leaves the outside matt and softly frosted, allowing the natural texture of the terracotta and sand casting to remain visible. Inside, the surface changes completely. A highly reflective gold glaze catches the light, creating a warm glow against the powdery blush-pink rim.
The contrast between rough and polished, earthy and luminous, makes Blushing Nebulae I particularly striking. Measuring 29 × 15 × 14 cm, this contemporary South African ceramic sculpture is available for R14,850.
