Artwork Description
Canopus Crystals II by Sylvester Zanoxolo Mqeku brings together two very different ceramic surfaces. Its chalky, sand-cast exterior is deliberately rugged, with ridges and protruding forms that give the vessel an almost geological character. Inside, a pool of intense cobalt-blue glaze is unexpectedly smooth and luminous.
Seen from this angle, the sculpture’s unusual structure becomes particularly apparent. The bowl seems to balance on a cluster of irregular feet, while the uneven rim retains the marks and character of Mqeku’s experimental making process. It is a piece that invites you to walk around it: from every side, the form and texture shift.
Measuring 28 × 14 × 28 cm, Canopus Crystals II is a distinctive contemporary South African ceramic sculpture for sale at R20,750.
