Triassic Pollen II by Sylvester Zanoxolo Mqeku feels as though it might have been discovered rather than made. Its low, irregular form is covered with rough protrusions and deposits, giving the surface the character of something ancient, fossilised or slowly formed underground.
Mqeku works with both terracotta and white earthenware, using his sand-casting process to create the sculpture’s wonderfully unpredictable exterior. Copper carbonate and darker earthy passages deepen the texture, while the inside opens into a beautifully fluid glaze of dark blue and copper green. The contrast is particularly striking: rugged and elemental on the outside, cool and luminous within.
At 28 × 16 × 10 cm, Triassic Pollen II is a compact sculptural piece that rewards a closer look, particularly where the glazes meet the raw, granular ceramic surface.
